Orange Flying
Beetles
In mid July Lycostomus loripes and
Neolycus fernandezi create a show in
this area. These are the orange
beetles seen ßying about ßowering
bushes, where they congregate to
mate. They are ~10mm long.
Although ÒPhylogenomic analysis of
the family Lycidae (Coleoptera:
Elateroidea)Ó, the Master thesis of
Dominik Kusý, does not deal with
these species speciÞcally, it is an
excellent study of the family.
Lycostomus loripes
(Chevrolat 1835)
This species is listed as Lycus loripes
in some sources. Its range extends
from southeastern Arizona into west
Texas, south into Mexico. The very
similar Lycostomus simulans is found
in Arizona.
