The Columbus quadrangle (south of Deming) to the
right (Ò3Õ) dates from 1920, Þrst rendered in 1917.
At the next page we note some cultural changes in
maps from the Deming quadrangle. (Map Ò4Ó and its
detail Ò5Ó are from 1899 and map Ò6Ó and two details
from the map, Ò7Ó and Ò8Ó, are from 1915.) The scale
for these maps is 1:125,000.
In details of the maps (Ò5Ó and Ò7Ó) it is apparent that
Deming grew a lot between 1899 and 1915.
Springs are identiÞed on both maps, more apparent in
the details of the maps (Ò5Ó, Ò7Ó, and Ò8Ó). The ÒOld
ButterÞeld TrailÓ is shown on both maps but is labeled
as such in the 1915 edition. Fort Cummings and the
spring we know as CookeÕs Spring is shown on both
maps.
In the 1915 version of this quadrangle, the road from
ÒMirageÓ (a watering station on the Atchison Topeka
and Santa Fe Railroad) to Fluor Camp at the south end
