Per BugGuide: ÒBoth Scolia dubia haematodes
and Triscolia ardens have black bodies, blue wings, and
red abdomens. They are easily confused in photography and are most reliably separated by wing
venation. Both species have a single recurrent vein.
S. dubia haematodes has two submarginal cells
whereas T. ardens has three submarginal cells.Ó
The male Triscolia ardens have a Òpseudostinger with
three narrow spines projecting slightly beyond the tip
of abdomen; females lack such spines.Ó (BugGuide)
That may be what we are seeing within the white
ellipses below.
